August 9, 2022 — We love being able to proudly claim, “Cards by Cardies for Cardies.” Especially since some of the most popular cards we make were written by Cardies as odes to old friends.

I happened to write the one above, inspired by looongtime kindred spirit Susan Lyon, who has authored seven messages of her own. In the featured cards below you’ll see “No matter the miles between us … you always feel near & dear,” which Candy Clausell wrote thinking of fellow Cardie Madeline Stockbridge, her bestie since second grade, despite their families moving to different parts of the country the following year.

Gosh, we’ve already published seven messages Candy wrote with special pals in mind, including “So tell me, girlfriend … does this horse make my butt look big?” Self-described as missing a backside, Candy dedicated the design with envy “To all my gifted girlfriends.” And when writing “Just thinking … what an important part of my life’s story you are,” she said she had Susan Bincoletto Siering in mind.

To acknowledge gal pals that she’s enjoyed since her college days, Carla Schmitt wrote the clock tower birthday card that reads “24 hours 1,440 minutes 86,400 seconds … the birthday clock is ticking and yay! so are you. Have a happy day.” On the card back you can see her dedication to The Gals of Bailey Third. “At Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC, eight of us lived on the third floor of Bailey dorm,” Carla explained. “The bonds we formed in 1978 have lasted, holding tight and strong … we’ve gotten together for a long weekend once a year for each of the past 44. There’s a real comfort in a friendship that formed when we were 18!” Can you relate and appreciate?

Last week a childhood friend relayed a message that “Tim, Bowie and Tony are looking for you!” Hahaha, those three have been best buddies since grade school, are each hilarious, and all have hearts of gold. We go back such a long way … Tony and I took tap-dancing together in third grade! Though I haven’t seen or spoken to them in, what, 30 years, they are still among my favorite people in the world, so I looked forward to tracking them down later this week once when we have our fall release off to the printer.

Last night they beat me to it, calling with all three of these crazysweet guys on speaker. It seems they are driving from where we grew up, the farmland of central Illinois, through Miami on their way down to Key West for a few days, and wanted to come by on their way to or from.

“From, please,” I said, hoping to have our 20 new designs and the catazine on press by then so I can kick back and enjoy the endless stories and laughter they will bring. Still on speaker, Tim quickly agreed, “We’ll catch you on the way back then,” to which Bowie chimed in, “And maybe we’ll stay a few days!” Hahaha, knowing he wasn’t kidding, I said, “It will be my pleasure! But, hey,” I added, “I just want to mention since we haven’t seen each other in decades, well, you can’t rightly call me Toothpick anymore. I am, shall I say, fat!” Without skipping a beat, Bowie said in a comforting way, “Oh, I know just what you mean,” then, “You should SEE Tim and Tony.” Hahahahaha. Toothpick or not, I can’t wait!

I’ll “report back,” as my late mom would say. Meanwhile, here are a few cards with which to let someone who cares about you hear how you’re doing. How nice it is to know we’re thought of, eh?
