JULY 29, 2019 – To begin this fresh new week, we thought we’d share a beautiful thought to live by. It’s printed on the rich, textured paper of a new Pretty Words card, with the inside left blank for words all your own.

The message is something my mother tried to get through to me while she was still alive (and I have no doubt she’s still trying :) Once her kids were grown, Mom moved from Illinois to Lookout Mountain of Tennessee, where she loved that there they said, “Go easy,” instead of maybe Goodbye or Have A Nice Day! She’d end our phone conversations, or just before closing the door behind me say, “Go easy, Jo” in her adopted drawl. Often, that was just after concluding, “Well, we don’t have to do it today.” I would get so aggravated with her, sometimes insisting, “Well, aaaaactually, if we want to — fill in the blank with “get this low air fare” or “secure those great theatre tickets before the show sells out” — we DO have to do it today, Mom.”

The more years that pass, the more I hear her words in a very different way. Now I think she might have been saying, “We don’t have to do it ALL today,” referring to the This, That and 12 Other Things I have no business cramming onto an already unrealistic To Do list. Tell me, when you meditate, do you ever think maybe you can sneak one or two thoughts in there really quick between the words you’re repeating to supposedly calm your mind?

Ha, our CEO Ana admits that, when she walks her sweet, ever-curious dog, she sometimes has so little patience and will be in such a rush that she’ll start grumbling, “Come on, Clementine,” then tap her foot, “Poop, poop, poop … let’s go already!” And, she says, the crazy thing is, “What Is My Rush?! Why do I seem to think there’s always something I must hurry off to?!?”

For all our sakes — not the least being Clementine’s — what say we give it a try in these hot, dwindling days of July: Go slowly, breathe and smile.
