September 23, 2022 — How many people do you love and admire for being clear about what they want, and who go for it! Free sprits who know what fills them back up and make sure to carve out enough “me time” to make that happen. Below you’ll see we’ve curated a collection of cards for the “Your day … Your way!” folks in your life.

The new Little Reminders card was inspired by our own Product Manager John Bowman, who still looks remarkably like that kid above. He’s among the most committed and hardest-working people we know and, after a long week of juggling the many product development balls we throw at him, loves nothing more than to sack out on his couch and watch a good movie. Or five. Or a whole HBO series all in one sitting. 🤣

If you’re a film buff lucky enough to know John, you don’t need Rotten Tomatoes. From John you get more than a review or rating; you get to ask him point blank, “Will I like this movie?”

Here on Miami Beach, my neighbors and I began following John’s lead and now often enjoy weekend Dinner + Movie Nite. About a dozen of us pick a theme, dine on the chosen cuisine, then project the film on the 15’ x 20’ white wall that separates our little building’s terrace from next door. It’s made for great Saturday nights, bringing us together in such a fun way.

On Brazilian Night we nibbled on yummy stuff like coxinha (chicken croquettes) and pão de queijo (aka cheese bread) before starting Girls from Ipanema. So Brazilian of us, we didn’t start the film until around 11 PM 😆 and it was nearly 1 AM when we realized it was not a movie but a series! Haha, around 3 AM we agreed, “It’s supposed to rain tomorrow … let’s pick this back up inside after lunch.”

Thai Night came to be because neighbor Liza is an avid scuba diver and proposed we watch Thirteen Lives, the Ron Howard docudrama on how divers rescued the young soccer team trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand. Very enthralling (as were the tasty Thai donuts we air-fried for dessert 😉).

We’re all up for Notte Italiana, though Norwegian neighbor Lars would like to watch The Godfather and I’d prefer the amazing Cinema Paradiso, even if it is my 10th time. Maybe I’ll propose a double-feature! But next up is Japanese Night because it’s eight-year-old Michala’s turn to choose and she loves anime and sushi. It was Michala’s mom Ana who turned me on to the one dog film perhaps ever made that makes us cry only happy tears, Rescued by Ruby.

A year ago I filed away an invaluable email from Contributing Cardie Jenni Betz. “Really enjoyed The Queen’s Gambit,” she wrote. “Have you watched Coda!? And Encanto! (Talk about a lesson in mental health! Plus, Lin-Manuel Miranda is as brilliant as ever!! Our six-year-old Hank plays We Don’t Talk About Bruno on repeat). Please tell me you’ve watched Ted Lasso? I wasn’t keen on a ‘sports’ show but, mercy, Ted Lasso is like Major League meets Mr. Rogers and makes radical-empathy funny. Carve out time, when you can!”

You know where this is going, Cardies. What say you make like John and Jenni, recommend your favorite films below, read what titles other Cardies have to suggest, then go have yourself a great movie weekend. Ay, Jenni, now I can’t stop singing We Don’t Talk About Bruno!
