Aug 25, 2023 — We know Cardies generally take no one and nothing for granted. Still, after releasing this new Doctor Thank You design a few weeks ago, we were tickled to hear from Contributing Cardie Lauren Rowell, “Just in time for National Grateful Patient Day, September 7th!”

We can’t speak to who came up with a Grateful Patient Day, but we’d love to tell you how this card idea came to be … back in May, Cardie Karen Haines emailed to say, “I received the Wonder Woman card and matching magnet that I ordered and can’t wait to give them to my doctor!” Over the years, we’d heard from other Cardies that they regularly send cards and/or thank you notes to acknowledge their family members’ physicians, so we reached out to Karen to ask if she’d kindly share her plans for Wonder Woman.

Although crazy busy keeping up with life, Karen took the time to explain, “I believe that my dear, elderly parents — who I now care for and mean everything to me — started me out on this card journey as a child, having me make and write thank you notes to everyone who was kind to me. Especially in the past year, I’ve found that that early practice really stuck! My husband and I both went through major cancer surgeries, and before we could even recover, I found my first thoughts were, ‘I need to send thank you cards to all of the nurses, patient care techs, hospital custodian, doctors, and surgeons.’ LOL, I truly am a Cardie! I just always want to show people I’m appreciative and make sure they feel loved.”

In the Wonder Woman card, she said she’d written, “Thanks for being one of the rare and exceptional doctors who really cares about their patients. Most are looking at the chart, but you take the time to look far beyond that. It means a lot! Having healthcare peace of mind is priceless and I thank you from the bottom of my heart. May God bless you for your dedication to your profession, and the way you do it all with love.”

Wow. Who wouldn’t want to read gratitude expressed like that?! We thanked Karen and said she definitely inspired us to come up with a Doctor Thank You card. She responded with, “Awesome! The writing is not award-winning, but came from my heart!”

We next reached out to Mary Morini, the retired HR exec who, to date, has authored 20 designs that are among our most popular. Mary had mentioned to me in the past that she makes a point of thanking the physicians who care for her, her husband, and family she holds dear, so we asked if she might share the messages she pens with the Cardie Community for their own possible use. As always, Mary kindly obliged, saying, “The following may not be suitable to print on Cardthartic cards, but here are the kind of things I’ve written in blank notes:

Thanks for bringing me back to good health.
I feel fortunate to be under your care.

Your medical expertise, empathy and listening
made a huge difference. I’m very grateful.

Thank you for being the dedicated, thoughtful,
and compassionate doctor you are.

Everyone should have a doctor like you!
Thanks for taking such good care of me.

You guided me through the ups and downs of
my health journey. Thanks for making a difference.

Reading these, we asked Mary if it was ok to publish the mashup of her messages you now see on the published card. She agreed and, happily, Karen approved, too. When we asked Mary if she might like to dedicate it to someone, she said, “Yes! I’d like to say, ‘Grateful for Mohammad M. Ahmed, MD.’ He’s my Internist and, after every visit, I think, ‘I’m so thankful he was born!’”

Below you’ll see a selection of note cards made to hold Mary’s thought-starters or words of your very own. As I was writing this story, our graphic designer Brandon was creating the image that features the card, and shared, “Years ago, by sending me to the hospital, ‘Right Now!’ my primary doctor prevented me from going into heart failure. I spent three weeks in the hospital with a picc line delivering high doses of antibiotics directly to my heart, and that doctor visited me every day – even on weekends. While I don’t recall exactly what I wrote in my thank you note, I know it was a heartfelt expression of gratitude for everything he did, as he went above and beyond, and truly saved my life. As I recall, I also sent champagne and chocolates!”

Now there’s a thought! However we best express it, here’s to staying grateful for those who help keep us healthy and happy. Take care of yourself.
