JUNE 08, 2018 – A few weeks ago, my writer friend Linda sadly learned that a high school buddy of hers had killed himself, leaving behind a devastated husband and 11-year-old twins.  At the news, Linda was numb. As surely are the friends and families of Kate Spade, Anthony Bourdain and the 44,000 other Americans who took their own lives in the past year alone.

Speaking with Linda yesterday, I was surprised by how cheerful she sounded when I know the loss hit her hard. “Well,” she said, “nothing like a friend taking his life to remind you to appreciate your own.” She told me that, since receiving the sad news, “I’ve felt strangely energized … I’ve made great headway on my novel, and finally entered four writing contests that had been on my radar for years. And I’ve decided it’s time to look for a new apartment nearer friends like you whose company I enjoy. I guess this loss shook me up enough that I want to make sure I don’t waste one minute of those I’ll be given.”

This week’s celebrity losses will help bring much-needed attention to depression and the all-around tradegy that is suicide and, at Cardthartic, we’re all for that. At the same time, we feel it’s important to say, let’s go in to this weekend following Linda’s lead, and making the most of our moments. If you’re able, go for the joy that’s there for the taking every day.
