July 20, 2018 – Out my window yesterday morning, the Atlantic was looking smooth as silk, so I called my friend Hannlis to invite her to meet for a morning swim; it’s her most favorite time to do laps, when the water’s like glass. At 94, her right hip has mended well enough from a break back in December that she can make the three blocks from home to the beach using her walker. But on those final 40 paces from the walking path to the shore, Hannlis likes to take an arm.
“I wish I could join you,” she told me, “but my solar panels are coming today, and the installers are on their way. So exciting! I look forward to seeing what I’ll save on my taxes and electricity.” Yes, we say it here all the time, “The woman is amazing!”
If you don’t have them already, we heartily encourage you to seek out friends like this one – people who see life as filled with peace and promise. Hannlis lives as if she’ll have a million tomorrows and, come what may, she’s going for it!
I’ve always loved the old saying that goes something like, “There are three keys to success: Find something to do, something to love, and something to look forward to.” In Hannlis we see that’s so true! She challenges herself to walk at least a mile a day, loves reading, and looks forward to spending six weeks in her homeland over Christmas. “My late brother’s wife will be celebrating her 80th outside Dusseldorf,” Hannlis explains. “She came here for my 90th, and I want to be there for her party, too.” And, for that party, Hannlis will be packing this new Passages birthday design. :) Cardies, as she would say, “You have a beautiful day!”
