DEC 23, 2018 – “and thought of you,” is how this card continues inside. “Wishing you Happy Holidays.” All this crazybusy last week, I was looking for a quiet moment to connect with my friend Sarah in Chicago. She’s really been on my mind as this will be her family’s first Christmas without her mother, with whom she was very close. Her mom passed away this year at 91, and her father two years ago. After a few rounds of phone tag, I finally emailed, “Thinking of you. I hope you have a wonderful, restful holiday, though it will surely not be the same without your mom and your dad. I feel my parents’ presence so much this time of year. Always, really, but especially now.”

Sarah’s response was so soothing and beautiful that I asked her permission to share it here. To me, it applies to everyone we’ve ever loved and lost. And it feels like a little blessing I want to hold on to, especially this coming week. “I feel their presence every day,” Sarah wrote. “I really miss them, but I have a smile in my heart for them. They gave me their best, it lives within me, and I cherish it.”
