August 30, 2022 — Hard to believe that 25 years have passed since the world bid “Goodbye, English Rose” to Princess Diana. While this day may get international attention, all year long families and friends are more quietly grieving the loved ones they’ve lost, a million to the pandemic in the past two years alone.

We had already planned to use the anniversary date tomorrow to remind you of the availability of the grief support design above in this Cardie Newsletter today, so it was a bit of synchronicity to hear from Cardie Cathy Pena over the weekend that “it is my favorite Cardthartic card. When someone I know loses a loved one,” she explained, “I notate when the one-year anniversary will occur and send them this card so they know I have not forgotten them and that I am here for them. I have been amazed by how touched they are by this very small gesture.”

Cathy officially becomes a “Contributing Cardie” this Friday when we release 20 new designs, among them a beautiful birthday card that carries a message she penned in a card to Hannlis back when our Cardie Oma turned 96. ❤️

“It was a Cardthartic sympathy card that I received several years ago that introduced me to this amazing community,” Cathy shared with us. “After receiving that card, I went onto your site and immediately found others that had the perfect words that would speak my heartfelt message. I have been ordering ever since, and people always tell me that I send the most special cards.

“Being quite shy, I find that I can more easily express myself through the written word,” Cathy shared and, here’s synchronicity at play again, it was not lost on us that 19-year-old Diana had been called ‘Shy Di’ by the press back in the day. One of her press secretaries cleared that up years later in a Vogue magazine interview, explaining, “People used to call her that because she kept her head down when she talked to you. She was conscious of her height — 5 foot 10 — and used to keep her head down when talking to people to make them feel more comfortable and be at their own level.

“Once she went to visit a residential home for the blind,” the press secretary related, “And there was a lady and a gentleman sitting in the entrance hall, both partially sighted. When Diana stopped to talk to them, the man had tears welling up in his eyes. She asked, ‘What’s the matter?’ and he said, ‘I can’t see you.’ Knowing blind people are able to sense through touch, Diana immediately squatted down, took his hand, and put it on her face. She had this capacity to instinctively react. You can’t teach anybody to do that.”

Compassion seems to come naturally to Cathy, too. She says, “I believe that, in any given moment, there is someone in need of receiving a message that says, ‘Hey, I am thinking of you,’ or ‘I am here for you.’ And I believe that all of us Cardies are united by the same thought, to make someone smile or make someone’s day better. I am forever grateful and humbled to be part of this community.”

Inspired by this anniversary and Cathy’s kindness, we’ve curated a collection of grief support designs below, and the button will take you to all that we offer. Just in case you know someone who will be warmed by your reaching out to help soothe that everlasting ache in their heart.
