Nov 4, 2023 — If she’d not gone off to the big card shop in the sky 18 months ago, our Cardie Oma Hannlis would be 100 today! 🥳 The photo of her enjoying the big stack of cards sent from Cardies far and wide was taken back on her 95th.
For anyone new to our Cardie Community, I’ll describe Hannlis Hawk as a dear friend, neighbor, and favorite beach buddy of mine here on Miami Beach. The star of many a Cardie Newsletter, H was a constant source of inspiration — for our cards and LIFE.
For years, out my office window overlooking the Atlantic, I’d seen the whippet-thin woman with snow-white hair swimming in the sea and beachcombing day after beautiful day. Finally, one afternoon eight years ago, I went down to the shore to write and made a point of parking my fanny near where she was stretched out on a beach blanket reading.
An unbreakable bond was formed that day, and I wrote and dedicated the card above to Hannlis. And the first three designs you see below, they began as messages sweet Cardies penned in their own birthday cards to H over the years.
A few months after we lost Hannlis, in May of ‘22, I was sent this amazing poem written by the brilliant Bernadette Noll, and it seemed to describe my friend more exactly than I ever could. I shared it with you then, and now will again … with thanks for allowing me to share her wisdom, grace, and good humor with our caring Cardie Community, here’s to Hannlis, who undeniably aged like sea glass.

Warm hugs for you, Jodee, as you remember your treasured friend on this milestone birthday. ❤️ I’m so grateful you met one another. She not only enriched your life, but through your sharing, she enriched the lives of so many of us in this Cardie Community. Gentle grace to each member of our Community as we remember. ❤️
The poem is beautiful. Is there a way to get a copy of it exactly like it is presented here? The posters on Bernadette Noll’s website are very nice, but this presentation is just perfect. Thank you for sharing it, and many thanks to Bernadette Noll.
Hello, Beth.
On a PC, if you right click on the image of the poem, and click “Save image as…” you can save the image to your computer and either print it at home or some sort of a copy place may be able to print the jpeg for you. If you are using an Apple device or are viewing this on a cell phone, I don’t have an answer. Definitely not a tech person, but that would give you a copy of the image.
What a beautiful way to start my day. The Cardie Community is truly a blessing.
Thinking of you Jodee. It was obvious to Cardies that you and Hannlis had a special bond. The poem is perfect!
Hannlis was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to know her.
A photo of H holding a bottle of wine would be a perfect example of the saying “Aging Like Fine Wine” .
Raise a glass.
Prost! to Hannlis.
Hugs to you,Jodee. Such happy memories your friendship with Hannlis created! What if you hadn’t taken the time to go “parking your fanny” where you and she could meet?
Life is like that. Some chance encounters and some arranged encounters that change our life’s trajectory.
Obviously, Hannlis recognized how special you are too.
Happy Birthday, Hannlis!
The best friends are those who continue to inspire and guide us, even after they’ve left our earthly bonds.
Sending love, peace, and comfort, to you, Jodee, as you continue to let Hannlis’s life wisdom and big heart flow through you.
We are all the benafactors of your abiding love and friendship!
