May 14, 2023 — Happy Mother’s Day to all the Cardie Moms among us, and much gratitude to the mothers whose great love of card-sending lives on in us. 🥰

We have our Cardie Coordinator Lauren Rowell to thank for the message on the lovely card your Fairy Cardmother chose for you above. When asked what she might say this Mother’s Day, Lauren wrote, “I grew up with a legacy of strong women, mighty with the pen. They wrapped me up with their loving words, which gave me strength to persevere through whatever challenge lay before me. Their words cheered me on, celebrated victories, and encouraged me through dark times. It’s an honor to continue their legacy, sharing love and letting others know they are seen and valued every chance I have.”

“My love of a good card is in my genes,” Contributing Cardie Ann John wrote us when she introduced herself in 2016. “My mother lived every moment of every day, and unexpectedly passed away at the age of 94 watering her garden on a lovely afternoon in May. She’d apparently stepped out in the middle of writing in a card to a 100-year-old friend. That unfinished note was mailed as it was, with an added explanation of how it was found.”

Cardie Marcia Rockwood shared, “My mother — who passed at age 95 but continues to be a guiding presence in our lives — was a journalist who taught her four girls the importance of correspondence. While we may lack her talent for penmanship, we have passed along the importance of writing to our children and grandchildren.”

“I’ve always loved and sent a lot of cards,” says Contributing Cardie Candy Clausell, “but never appreciated how much that meant to those on the receiving end until I packed up my aunt’s house after she passed away. Under her bed I found a big box filled with two decades of cards from my late sister and me! Aunt Nippie was like a mother to me — raising us after our mother died when I was seven — so you can imagine how moving it was to see for my own eyes how much she cherished all those cards we’d sent over the years.”

Barbara Flanigan Howard shared, “At 99, my mom was excited to plan her 100th birthday party which would have been on July 4, 2020. Unfortunately, time was not on her side and she passed of natural causes a few months before. Unbeknownst to her five children, she had my sister help her in writing each one of us — including her grandchildren and great grandchildren — a letter in which she told us just how much she loved us. A letter in which she thanked us for all the wonderful care and concern we gave her throughout her life. She spoke of my dad’s passing years before and how we rallied around her to give her love and support. Most of all she thanked God for giving her the most wonderful gift of all, her family. I still have that letter today and will cherish it forever. To let someone know how much you mean to them is a wonderful gift.”

Indeed. Cardies, using Lauren’s words and speaking for your Fairy Cardmother and all your fans at Cardthartic, “Grateful for you … for your beautiful heart and the joy you bring to this world.” We hope you feel very, very loved today.
