AUG 14, 2018 – If this precious face doesn’t make you want to bring home a dog, nothing will!  Along with being a sweet way of saying Happy Birthday to dog lovers you love, we thought this card might also be a great way to give you a heads-up for this weekend’s Clear the Shelters day.

Clear the Shelters is a nationwide push to find a forever home for as many cats and dogs as possible. This Saturday, August 18th, thousands of participating shelters across the country will waive or reduce adoption fees in the hope that we’ll all take home a furry best friend. Now if only we had as much room in our homes as we do in our hearts, right?! At Cardthartic, we can’t help being behind this initiative because so many of our own beloved pets are rescues. So just to get you thinking that maybe, just maybe, there is room for another four paws in your house, here we’re going to share a few of our own rescue stories with you. :)

“Dude chose us,” says Creative Director Valerie Sebring. “As a family, we went to the Friends of Greyhounds shelter in Miami. After meeting several other dogs, our seven-year-old, Riley, had his eye on a shy black one. When it was returned to its kennel so we could consider others, Riley began to cry and, as I kneeled to comfort him, Dude nudged his nose right into the conversation, as if he wanted to offer comfort, too. I knew right then that this sensitive soul was ‘the one.’”

“I adopted ‘If I fits, I sits’ Kitty from the Humane Society shelter as a birthday gift to myself,” says Sales Coordinator Nikki Duge. “There were so many cute kittens to choose from, but he jumped out as the only male in the litter, and with that adorable white spot on his chest. Kitty’s been my faithful companion for 13 years now, and I especially love how loving he is with my seven-year-old daughter, Brooklyn. There is not a night that he isn’t sleeping curled up right next to her.”

“Because I’d always loved the temperament of our founder’s sweet Papillon rescue, Josephine, I kept checking the site where Jodee had found her,” says our Chief Administrative Officer Ana Behm. “It was Jodee who saw the listing from a man who said he’d found a little black dynamo running the streets a month before — he could not keep her, but couldn’t bring himself to take her to a shelter either. Funny, the night before I went to meet her, I kept humming, ‘Oh my darling, Oh my darling …’ That’s how she came to be named Clementine ? Seven years later, I still get emails checking on her from the man who is so rightly named Angel.”

If your heart is saying, “Yes!” to another cat or dog, but there’s really no room at the inn, here’s another way you can contribute to Clear the Shelters Day. Between now and August 21st, stock up on your longtime or new-favorite cards, magnets and boxed notes, and we’ll donate half of every dollar you spend to the Best Friends Animal Society. Face it, Cardies, you ARE the person your dog thinks you are.
