JUNE 17, 2018 – “It’s inscribed in our hearts” is the message inside this new card. As we pay tribute to fathers today, I’m wondering if my bubbly little four-year-old buddy Veronica will one day get such a card for her awesome dad.

Below Veronica is with Mickey, Tony and Minnie. :) The backstory is that, Thursday before last, Tony proclaimed to his wife, “Tomorrow I’d like to take Veronica to Disney World.” Not Mom’s dream get-away, she said, “Um, not the best weekend for me,” to which her beloved husband teased, “Actually, I wasn’t inviting you. :) I have in mind spending the next four days one-on-one with our daughter. Just hanging, Veronica and me.” And Minnie & Mickey.

I found this so utterly cool that I told my 94-year-old friend Hannlis, who enthused (as only Hannlis can), “Oh, how Veronica will cherish that memory one day!” I said, “Sounds like you’re speaking from experience,” and watched her sit back, smile a little wistfully, then turn and share with me, “Like it was yesterday, I remember my father back in Germany taking me up into the mountains to climb. Just the two of us.” Then, with a big grin and little giggle, she added, “85 years ago! You see,” she pointed out, “it’s just as the card says, ‘Treasured time with our favorite people is never gone or forgotten, it’s inscribed in our hearts!’ And Veronica is one lucky little girl.”

Indeed. Lucky and precocious and already in touch with a dear sense of gratitude … Veronica reported that her favorite part of the seven-hour road trip and four Disney days with Dad was, “I got to meet Ariel, and all the princesses, and it was by appointment, because my dad didn’t want me to have to stand two-and-a-half hours in a line.” Yes, Veronica is a lucky girl, to have a dad who is a bright attorney, a marvelous cook, a caring friend to many, and ~ first and foremost ~ a man with a plan: To carve out time and find ways to better know and appreciate his incredible kid, and maybe inscribe some treasured time in that big heart of his own.

Today, may those of us raised by a good dad find a moment to reconnect with our treasured times spent with them. And to the good men approaching parenting in the mold of Tony, let us make more a point of saying, “Thank You!” all year round. Happy Father’s Day.
