ALT="Cardthartic Meanings of Life card with bicycle built for two"Nov. 6, 2020 — Here at the end of this roller coaster of a week, we thought we’d offer you a pleasant diversion: Meet a few Cardie couples that represent the “more perfect union” that we all wish for our nation. It seems the most happily marrieds among us never run each other down but rather toot each other’s horns! :)

Cardie Jeffrey Lazar recently shared, “I’ve learned so much from my wife Barb. We met 55 years ago at Syracuse and I doubt Las Vegas would even have taken the odds on us! For our 53rd, I wanted to do something especially nice and, well, when we’ve been together for as long as we have, you don’t really need anything or want anything, so I thought, ‘She’s such a song lover,’ and I typed up all her favorite lyrics — 181 pages — and had them printed, bound and titled, Barb’s Songbook.” ❤️ How cool is that!? As Barb aptly described, “He’s a friendly, kind, very nice man.”

Visiting the home of Contributing Cardie Nancy McGinn and her husband Jim for the first time a few years ago, Jim was wonderfully considerate to give Nancy and me time and space to get acquainted. He’d marinated, grilled and served salmon, freeing Nancy and me to talk (and talk and talk :). Fast forward to just a few months ago, Nancy emailed me at the height of the lockdown to share a laugh courtesy of her clever husband. “This morning I called out to Jim at the other end of the house that I was ‘Jumping into the shower!’ And right back came his, ‘Has it been a week already?!’” ❤️

With a schoolgirl blush and pure Jersey-girl accent, Contributing Cardie Candy Clausell refers to her husband Pablo as “My Treasure” after 23 years of marriage. It’s so heartwarming to sit at the shore with Candy and, as the sun is setting and breeze picking up, see Pablo come walking up behind her with a warm sweater. ❤️ Then there was the dinner party at which Candy admitted to being so proudly frugal that, in college, she dropped a glass jar of peanut butter and — rather than toss such a valued commodity — picked out the shards and kept eating. Without skipping a beat, Candy’s Treasure teasingly told her audience, “And you wonder why I have stomach problems?!”

Contributing Cardie Mary Morini dedicated the first Passages card carrying one of her messages to her husband of 41 years, Larry (aka “Prince Handsome”). Anyone who knows and loves the couple knows better than try to reach either of them on a Wednesday; it’s “Date Day” when they focus their time and attention solely on enjoying each other’s company. ❤️

As our card says of marriage, so too with getting Americans to pedal amiably onward together: It’s so very challenging! Let’s don our helmets and head into this weekend holding the thought that loving hearts will prevail. And, just for good measure, here’s some calming audio to smooth the ride.
