ALT="Cardthartic Meanings of Life card featuring Superman with a pen and Clark Kent glasses above card laying flat on the table"June 20, 2020 — If you’re a superdad reading this, Happy Father’s Day! Based on the fact that 80% of all cards are sent by women, your honoring emotions in this way makes you an exceptional man indeed. May today you feel even more admired and appreciated than you are every day.

Cardies, we’d like to take this occasion to point out some good guy cards made to celebrate great men throughout the year on their birthdays, and also introduce two gents that we’re especially happy to have in our community. We salute them today because they are just the sort anyone would feel blessed to have as a father … and a friend.

David Puett first emailed us a little over a year ago. “Good morning, all. I just received my first card package yesterday (almost $100 worth) and you should have seen Mary and me going thru that box! Please tell my Fairy Cardmother thanks for her sweet note. We love the cards.”

A few months later, he wrote again to say, “A woman I met at church loves cards as much as I do, so I told her all about Cardthartic and, the following Sunday, took her my Big Book to look through. That was a while ago. She’s placed an order, but has not returned my catalog! Could you please send her one of her own so she’ll give mine back. :)” and he shared the woman’s name and address.

Since then, we’ve been delighted to hear from David every month or so. In early March he wrote, “Remember the lady at our church I spoke about who bought cards from you and now loves them, too? Sad to say, Deborah’s husband has died of a heart attack … just a wonderful fellow. Thinking you guys might want to send a card. Thanks, David Puett (Cardie)”

How thoughtful is that!? We sent Deborah our condolences, and tucked in a printout of David’s email so she would know it was his kindness and admiration for her husband that inspired the gesture. Weeks ago, along came another David e: “Hey. I just wanted to mention, we sent out several cards recently to some nurses we know and three of them loved the cards so much that they each posted them on their Facebook page saying how nice it was to receive them, especially during their tough times. Just wanted you guys to know how much what you do means to people.” That felt so good. David Puett, what a charming Cardie.

Now meet another: Phil Little. Four years ago we were tickled to receive the email from him that read, “I purchased some of your cards in a shop here in Minneapolis. This note pertains to #93964.

“The verse —We are all exactly where we’re meant to be. — was perfect for my granddaughter, a college freshman. She’d had a recent disappointment that would be difficult for anyone, but from which she ‘sucked it up’ and moved on. To me, she showed her maturity, a thought reinforced by your message. Being impressed with the verse, and being an amateur songwriter, I further decided to write a song dedicated to her based upon the verse. I recorded it and forward it to her today, her birthday. This note with a copy of that song attached is sent to you as a thank you for this particular card and the others my wife and I have used.”

How fun is that … a Cardthartic card message set to music! As with many of the great Cardies who devote the time and energy to reaching out to us, some emailing ensued … we got to know Phil Little a little (no pun intended, as he might say) and learned he had 400 songs to his credit. When card 93964 was reprinted, we took the opportunity to dedicate it to Phil and his beloved Claire. :) Now you won’t be surprised if/when we collaborate to publish some of his song lyrics as card messages.

When we reached out to Phil last week to ask if we might talk him up here on Father’s Day, he replied, “The thought gives me great pleasure. Thanks for thinking of me. We are all well,” he wrote, and his muse, “Granddaughter Claire has now graduated (has it really been four years?!) and is employed at a respected consulting firm. Due to the pandemic, she’s been deported from the Chicago office to the family cabin in northern Minnesota to work her long days via the web (yes, it is tough duty but someone has to do it! :)

“Stay safe and continue to do the good things you do,”  he closed. Then came back with, “PS: Since we last corresponded a year ago, I have written over 50 songs.” :) This Father’s Day, we’re all invited to soak up some good dad energy by having a listen to this. Cardies, Phil Little’s, Where We’re Meant to Be.
