June 15, 2022 — This week I have been feeling so inexplicably sad that I decided it must be that I’m just missing Cardie Angel Hannlis and my mom … I blamed the January 6th Hearings — had these two news hounds still been on this Earth, I know they’d have been watching every moment live, calling me with the play-by-play, and listening to the pundits rehash it late into the night. 🤓 Then a friend kindly reminded me that a full moon always magnifies emotions, making us feel whatever we’re feeling all the more intensely.

Knowing that many are mourning losses, today we thought we’d feature our new grief support design. The card idea was sent to us from great Wisconsin Rep Mary Aschenbrener. She’d emailed after leaving an appointment with the yummy home furnishings store design a la mode in historic Suamico, WI. “Card Buyer Jessica Nuss proposes a Meanings of Life grief support card featuring pennies from heaven.”

We’d never heard this folklore, so Jess beautifully explained, “When I suddenly lost my dad, my mom told me the legend about pennies from heaven. She said that Dad would leave pennies around for me to see if I was ever feeling down or he wanted to let me know he was thinking of me.

“I have a jar at home just for these special coins,” Jess shared, “and it is now so very full! It has been eight years and I still ‘find’ Dad’s pennies from heaven, just when I need them the most!” It’s already clear that Jess was on to something with this idea because, of the 28 NEW designs released last week, it’s up among the most popular.

Yesterday, it felt like penny monsoon season here in Miami … on my doorstep, I found a huge box filled with hundreds of cards addressed to Cardie Oma Hannlis, all sent by this loving community in the past year. H had asked great friend Naomi to ship them on to me so I could read for myself how good and kind and giving so many of you are, and see yet again why Hannlis so appreciated you and your thoughtfulness.

It was amazing to pick up all these paper pennies that H dropped in my lap! Lovely, personal messages that read like each Cardie was writing to a dear friend. Some of you sent cards every few weeks, often signed in a charming way to give avid-traveller Hannlis a great sense of place:

Greetings from Judy Sherman in North Carolina
Love, Cardie Susana in Cleveland
Your friend from Pennsylvania, Cardie Lisa Lindquist
Linda Hull, your friend in the mountains of northern New Mexico
I’m so thankful the Cardie Community has brought you into my life, Hannlis.  Madeline Stockbridge, Stevens Point, Wisconsin
Please don’t tell Jodee I didn’t use one of her cards. 😉 Karen Trostle in Hayesville, North Carolina  🤣

Tearfully now I say, there is much more in this big box I will share with you in the future — I feel like Jess sitting here “very full!” For today I will just close here with a note that had been sent directly to Naomi from Cardie Extraordinaire Carrie Wolfgang back when Naomi was spending every last day she could with Hannlis. As owner of Novel Destination Used Book Emporium in Jamestown, NY, this Cardie is a Retail Partner, too. “Being a caregiver is such a blessing for you and Hannlis, too,” Carrie wrote. “It is not easy, but the gift of time together is priceless, and you will never regret all that you are doing. As Hannlis has shown us all, Naomi, you/we have many friends. You/we just don’t know them all yet.” Hear, hear!

Thanks to Jess and Meanings of Life artist Joanne Friar, we now have an uplifting new card to send to all those people we know who are missing someone as dear to them as Hannlis was to us. Pennies from Heaven!
