June 8, 2021 — Hot off the press, this new card seems so perfect for so many men and good guys well beyond Father’s Day (we’re talking every day!) that we wanted to quick give you the scoop.
A couple of months ago, Cardie Gerrie Kretschmar called our office to first say how much she loves giving our magnets as gifts. Then she suggested to our CEO Ana, “I would love to see more cards for men. Something that acknowledges how much they do, and thanks them for taking care of their families.”
Gerrie had no way of knowing what Ana knew: Our Founder and Chief Creative Jodee and I had that very day been fine-tuning the text for the man offering the ice cream cone image. When Ana forwarded Gerrie’s input to me, I emailed her the photo and proposed message and asked if it was anywhere near what she had in mind.
“YES!!!” she wrote back right away. “It’s great. When I spoke with Ana, I was talking about my son Jeff. He’s 44, is always looking out for me, and he’s just great! I think guys in general don’t get enough credit or thanks for handling their responsibilities,” Gerrie explained, “or for their kindnesses. I love this potential card because it’s just up-front, simple and to the point! It’s like a hug in a card!”
And just like that, this hug-in-a-card card was born … and, unbeknownst to Gerrie, dedicated to Jeff! :-) If she doesn’t read this Cardie Newsletter today, imagine her surprise when she sees the dedication on the samples that are on their way.
We love Gerrie’s idea of acknowledging the great men in our lives far more than we do, so how about we use Father’s Day as a kickoff!? Thanks for recognizing the need for more cards for men. I had heard that observation ( complaint, actually) in our retirement community prior to the pandemic lockdown of our shop. Realizing the women who spoke were correct — we all know the demographics in retirement communities favor women — I created a special display section labeled “cards for men” and included all categories of cards: birthday, get well, sympathy, retirement, graduation. I made an inch wide eye-catching 60″ strip banner that repeated CARDS FOR MEN over and over and placed it around the special section. I was amazed at how many said “thank you” — and bought some cards!! I’ll love adding “You’re a good and loving man…” now that we’ve re-opened.
