Contributing Cardie Jenni Betz

Our first — and still one of our most prolific — Contributing Cardies, Jenni is a powerful and poignant writer on life, love and loss. On her blog, betzfamilycolumbus, she writes about the everyday in her moving and whimsical, earthmom way.

It was the gorgeous little girl on the soon-to-be-released Thinking of You card above that led us to Jenni back in 2008. Our Founder Jodee had seen the portrait of Celia in the portfolio of photographer Amy Parrish. What we did not know was that Celia would soon leave this world at age four, taken by the rare childhood Batten Disease. It was through Jenni’s blog that we learned Celia’s story, a hard but glorious read. We’ve updated the message on Celia’s card several times over the years to keep it fresh as we’re honored to share her with the world and help keep her bright spirit alive.

Jenni’s writing was (and is) so rich and raw and mesmerizing that Jodee soon found herself mining Jenni’s blog posts for potential card messages. We created the first design featuring Jenni’s words in 2009. BONUS! She soon brought her equally-gifted mother — Rosemary Tolliver — into the fold. Today, both Jenni and Rosie have messages about life’s joys and challenges gracing a growing number of Cardthartic designs.

3 Betz BoysJenni is also an inspiration and favorite quotable source for our Cardie Newsletter, writing on her experiences with her nurse husband Andy, with whom she’s raising three good, kind, caring boys.

Based on her love for two nurses in her own life — Andy as well as sister Kate — Jenni shared her valued perspective on the emotional state of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic with our Cardie community. “The nurses I know are like Swiss Army knives,” Jenni wrote, “finding eleventy ways to try to spare a life. While that did not begin with the pandemic, years from now many of us will still be sharing stories of courageous frontline workers who saved us during the Covid crisis. And I love the new card to honor them!!!

“What’s so interesting to me,” Jenni wrote, “is how healthcare workers go so far ABOVE and BEYOND caring for patients. Andy shared with me that, soon after one of their Covid patients recovered, she turned 105. A staff nurse collected 105 cards from colleagues and delivered them to the lady, who declared she’ll open them one day at a time.”

Stay tuned … 105 cards written by Jenni Betz alone is a distinct possibility.
