Our founder considers Gay to be one of the most creative people she knows and a continual source of inspiration. The two have known each other since the start of their previous careers, gosh, back in the ’80s when Jodee was in public relations and Gay managed large-scale corporate special events. So it’s a sense of reinvention and mutual admiration as well as longtime love and laughter that has kept these two the best of friends.
It was because of Gay that our cannabis Meanings of Life card came to be. Having produced as many magnificent events as she cared to, in 2016 she created her second company to make cannabis-infused edibles and topicals. While Gay studied and researched and became an expert on the powerful little leaf, Jodee has never tried it in any of its many forms. “Maybe because a kooky college boyfriend back in the late ’70s smoked enough for both of us!” Jodee says. “But we had such a large number of requests for a design featuring cannabis that we asked Gay to help us bring this culturally significant card into being.”
While all for its recreational use, Gay is especially passionate about the health benefits of cannabis. “This natural remedy’s ability to provide relief means we can reduce dependence on prescription drugs in this country,” Gay says excitedly, citing research that shows cannabis can help relieve more than 50 medical conditions including chronic pain, insomnia, and depression.
Cannabis was not the first Cardthartic card Gay inspired, and surely won’t be the last. She’s helped us come up with just the right words for tennis and pickleball cards, and you’ll also find her referenced in many a Cardie Newsletter. That’s mainly because Jodee — and really all Gay’s friends and fans — feel they learn so much from her and are endlessly entertained by her.
For example, “She calls it her Friday Night Philosophy,” Jodee said, describing one way Gay takes good care of herself. Gay explains, “Come Friday night, I have always only wanted to be with people who are a soft place to land. I want to let my guard and my hair down with people I can be vulnerable with. Years ago I had my epiphany — ‘Why aren’t all my friends Friday night friends?’ — and I started easing out any porcupines.”
Haha, for 2021 National Love Your Pet Day, Gay shared, “I love my Kush Kush for her unconditional love. No matter where I am and no matter how I feel, she finds my lap and comforts me.
AND it’s so fun that she loves to go for her mani-pedis! ‘Look, Mom,’ she’s saying, ‘my nails are as pretty as yours!’” (Haha, can you tell this is one favored feline livin’ la vida loca in L.A.?)
“Kushy is the first girl cat I’ve ever had,” Gay explains, “and the only one ever with claws. Because I cannot do claws, I got her these soft tips put on at the groomers. Neon. Ha! Her mani-pedis cost more than mine!”
