It was August of 2019 when the amazing Paige Baker introduced herself to us. “Dear Cardthartic,” she began. “I’m writing to thank my Fairy Cardmother for getting my latest order of cards to me today. Yes, I use a lot of sympathy cards, because I am a trust and estate lawyer and so am always looking at final moments, and giving comfort and solace and tissues. It is a privilege to be able to do this, an honor really.

“Generally when I order from you, I don’t necessarily have anyone in mind … I have past experiences that will become future moments of need. Those needs are squarely in mind as I look through all the cards you offer. So, last week, I ordered many cards and among them was the Adirondack Loveseat with the words: ‘Some people are missed more than words can say.’ So heartfelt …

“That very card was face-up when I opened my order this morning, right before a client’s daughter walked into my office. She is the successor trustee for her parents, a couple that I worked with over the years, a couple I loved though only knew through the work I did for them.

“When the daughter told me that Mom had died on June 26th, I told her how sorry I was — I knew Mom had been ailing in memory, but Dad was taking good care of her. I asked about the funeral and how Dad was taking it, after 70 years of marriage, and was told the funeral was very touching. ‘It was held on July 2nd,’ she said, ‘and Dad died July 3rd.’ (Sharp intake of breath on my part.) ‘Dad just couldn’t live without Mom and, in the week after her death, he just lost the air that he breathed.’

“Wow … what does that say about the power of love?! That couple loved to the absolute fullest, and I wanted a way to let their children know that all of us saw that love and celebrated it. So it seemed meant for me to send them the Adirondack Loveseat, now empty but so recently full of life. In truth, it expressed my feelings far better than I possibly could have. Yes, ‘Some people are missed more than words can say.’”

So began a wonderful connection with one of the most thoughtful people we know. She has been muse to so many Cardie Newsletters, we’ve lost count. We tell powerful Paige stories so often because — in our caring community of kindred spirits — she’s exceptionally engaged and giving. A pro at honoring emotions, Paige shares her joys and challenges with an open heart, grace, and eloquence … which is how we came to know she lost two very dear friends in as many years.

“Dear Jodee,” she wrote in October of 2021. “Two weeks ago my beautiful friend Beth died of mean, mean pancreatic cancer. I am not being a nice person at all right now because I am so mad at cancer … and fate … and anything else I can blame because it was just so unfair.  She was 58!  So wrong on every level.

“I wanted you to know that Beth’s sweet husband called just now to say thank you for the cards over the last year. Tim said it always lifted her heart when my cards arrived. Near the end, I sent a card every other day.  Tim said he would reach in the mailbox and there would be a sage green envelope and he knew it was from me. And because it would make her happy, he would read the cards aloud.  He said, ‘That way, though you sent them to Beth, it felt like you also sent them to me.’”

Grief Support card 94113 was created in honor of Paige and her amazing gift for making close friends like Beth and Tim. This great storyteller inspired us to stop and consider that — when we lose our nearest and dearest — the focus is naturally on the love we had for them. What gets us through, though, has to be our willingness to still feel all the warmth and love, admiration and appreciation they had for us. Thank you, Paige. May you forever feel Beth’s great love for you.
