“I didn’t so much discover Cardthartic as Cardthartic discovered me! :) My lifelong friend, Candy Clausell, is a proud Contributing Cardie and dedicated a card she wrote to me. When Candy sent me the catalog in which my special card was featured, I became a fan and have been ever since!

“I’ve always loved sending cards so much because I love receiving them, and I find that I save the ones that have touched me. My husband never understood my drive to send people cards until I had surgery and he saw how many cards I received and what they meant to me. Now, he’s the first one to say, ‘We need to send a card!’

“One of my favorite designs is the Country Church card because the words are close to a song we sang at my mother-in-law’s memorial service. After sending that card to a neighbor when she lost her father, she said, ‘You are a rare gem and I’m so grateful to be your neighbor.’ That feels good!

“I also especially love the Bless the Helpers note cards that were created during the pandemic. I ordered a lot to have on hand and am glad I did as I’m always writing them to honor health workers. I hope Cardthartic knows that — because of your compassion as a company — a lot of warm fuzzies get sent all over. That caring philosophy does make a difference!

“Since the pandemic when Cardthartic began offering Cardie Yoga via Zoom, I’ve been a regular. In that group I especially feel like I am part of a caring community of like-minded people spreading compassion and love.”

Beyond Cardie Yoga, Madeline is an active member of the Cardie Community, regularly leaving wise and/or witty comments in response to our Cardie Newsletters. Below are some of our favorite MadLines:

– As one who has been on the receiving end of healing prayers and who actively prays every day, I can attest to the power of prayer. Thank you for the beautiful cards that communicate that one is being surrounded by the grace of prayers.

– In this age where people think a text will suffice, no way. I am overjoyed to get a card that has been mailed and that I can hold in my hand and reread. That makes my day.

– My fridge is covered in Cardthartic magnets, gifted to me mostly by Candy (big surprise) and they give me a daily lift.

– Emails and texts are great but there’s nothing like having a pretty card that you just can’t part with. Like so many other Cardies, I have boxes of cards that mean so much to me. I will take a box off the shelf and just sit with those notes and the wonderful sentiments inside.

– Is there anything better than a story that has you doubled over with laughter, barely able to take a breath? Bring it on.

– Sometimes I feel a little macabre stocking up on Cardthartic sympathy cards. It must be at this stage of life that I reach for just the right one on a regular basis. Recently our dentist’s father died and, in reading his obituary, I knew the card with gentlemen on the cover saying “One of the good guys gone” was perfect. His obit said to eat a few cookies in his honor and have ice cream (at least two scoops). This was a man after my own heart!

– One thing I’ve learned about grief: It has no timeline or deadline. It might catch you in the throat at the sound of a favorite shared song. Let grief sit at your side when you need it.

– A friend of mine said she still has the thank you note our son wrote to her after his high school graduation. That was 28 years ago. Cards matter.

– When someone is having serious health issues, I have sent sentiments like, “I’m covering you in prayer” or “I’m sending love, hugs and positive energy.” I also like to let them know they are not alone; I’m right there with them. Instead of saying that I know how hard it is, I will say, “This has to be so hard. I wish I could ease your burden.” I think just receiving my card showing them they’re being thought of lifts their spirits. Having been on the receiving end, that always meant a lot to me.

– I’ve been helping a friend from church who suffered a brain aneurysm a year ago and struggles with headaches and double vision. I drive her to appointments and help her with her business. In a recent thank you note I received from her, she didn’t mention the driving or work; she focused on the cards (all Cardthartic!) that I’d sent her. She wanted me to know, “They brought such encouragement and helped me know I wasn’t alone in those early days.” The power of cards!

– Thank you, Cardthartic, for the free “caregiver thank you” card you included in my last order. Our neighbor’s husband has had a form of dementia for several years and caring for him has been very challenging. Their daughter lives in town and is an emergency room nurse at our local hospital but, every day without fail, she stops at her parent’s home to help with her dad. She is an angel and I was so glad to send her that card.

– The knitting card is just perfect. I have a friend who crochets with a group of friends who proudly call themselves the hookers!

– I love a Thinking of You card, one that comes as a complete surprise. When my husband picks up our mail I ask, ‘Anything fun?’ and he knows just what I mean.
