Cardie Margaret Burke

To acknowledge her for being one of our most active Cardies, we sent Margaret a Spreading the Love Not the Virus! tote in February 2021. “Oh wow!” she wrote us the day it arrived.

“I just received the sweet tote bag! I teared up a bit when I opened it because — just before I went to my mailbox — I’d been talking to a ‘cousin-in-law’ about her elderly parents and how the isolation is so hard on the elderly (well, on us all, but especially on those who have a hard time getting out & about on the best of days/years).

“Thinking I’d up my card-sending game, I pulled out the  hibernating bear card as well as the black-eyed Susan ‘just checking’ card to send to these elders. And I thought of the XOXO card I’d just sent to my aunt yesterday. All the while, I could not get out of my head the Beatles song, Eleanor Rigby, ‘All the lonely people …’

“So imagine how delighted I was to find a package to me in my mailbox! It’s nice to be thought of … we all need some moments of delight these days!!!  Receiving your package was a great example of how reaching out to people does make a difference in boosting spirits and it does matter (a lot!).”

Margaret later shared, “I learned of Cardthartic in February of 2019, when my mother died. My mom’s friend Susan sent me the Meanings of Life a good cry’ card, and I thought it was hands-down the best card I received. I’ve kept it on my home office desk ever since as a reminder that it’s ok to let the waves hit when they come.

“I went to cardthartic.com so I could have that same perfect card on hand for other people when the need arises and, well, it was just meant to be! When my story was published in the Cardie Newsletter, I wrote Susan and told her how her sympathy card had taken this serendipitous turn! I’d been meaning to ask how she was doing during the pandemic, and this bit of Cardie “stardom” was the perfect little chuckle to share with her.

“She was delighted to hear how her card had led me down this funny little path and asked for the website so she could go there, too, then updated me on her life. She told me it was good to hear from me and how much she missed the fun she had with my mother.

“I’m so glad I wrote to her. Sometimes we put off & put off things we intend to do, and sometimes we miss the opportunity altogether. It’s easy to have days, weeks, months disappear without acting. Well, two months after my exchange with Susan, I saw her obituary.  I was very grateful that I’d had the opportunity to reach out to her … and that I took it. You just never know.”
