I grew up in Vermont, have lived in Mississippi, Delaware, North Carolina, northern New York, Egypt, and now, at 84, live in a Quaker-related retirement community, Kendal at Longwood, in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, about an hour from Philadelphia.

I have been a college English teacher, a magazine editor, and the co-owner of a yarn shop in a college town. Since 2017, I’ve proudly served as the greeting card buyer for the Gateway Shop, a small but wonderful ‘necessarie’ shop within Kendal‘s main building. It’s a volunteer job, and I love it! We sell clothing, jewelry, books, toys (for grandchildren), sundries, stamps, and cards, providing a very handy on-site service to our 400 residents, 350 of whom live independently in cottages and apartments and 100 of whom are in assisted-living or skilled nursing care.
I order from over a dozen suppliers, and can assure you that Cardthartic is the most popular line in the shop! Many residents have heard me tell the story of the company run by caring women who are also very savvy. I tell them, “Cardthartic knows all about the power of the right words!”

At Kendal, I also co-chair a lecture series committee, help choose books for our 10,000-volume library, and am active in the non-partisan political advocacy group, The Way Forward. Our group is now about 150 strong. We study, organize, and write, write, write. Since obtaining your free Please Listen postcards, we use those to write and — as we do — we imagine the scene being repeated all over the country: bright red Please Listen postcards carrying messages to town councils, school boards, state legislators, members of Congress!!

Connection, collaboration, sharing responsibility. That’s what it’s all about, isn’t it?”
