Carla and her equally eloquent sister Ann John are both Contributing Cardies we’re crazy about. Carla joined the community after seeing the gorgeous Passages design 93833 carrying Ann’s description of their late mother, Virginia McCracken, back in 2016. The card front reads, “She lived every moment of every day.” And, inside, “In tribute to her, let us all do the same.” Carla wrote to thank us for publishing it and, in her email, she added, “Mama mailed love and encouragement tucked into every corner of the cards she sent throughout her long life, and her example is ingrained in our hearts and habits.” Needless to say, we encouraged this second McCracken sister to write on!
Jodee was so charmed by the closeness of the sisters, their mutual admiration, and their love of cards that she soon asked them to meet her for a weekend in Charleston, SC, with Jodee’s sweet 7 lb Papillon along for the ride. It was a lovely time of good long walk & talks. When Carla learned a year later that Miss Josephine Barker would be having radiation therapy to shrink a tumor pressing on her spine, Carla sent a note from her home in South Carolina to Jodee (and Josephine :) on Miami Beach. Her message, “My thoughts fly across the miles to you,” was so soothing and well-received that we paired it with the airborne lanterns image, and Carla proudly became a Contributing Cardie, too! We imagine Carla’s sweet message lifting many others’ spirits as it originally did Jodee’s and, we might add, that Carla’s good energy is credited with helping keep Josephine going strong for three years past all expectations.
And how great is this?! When Carla learned that her “My thoughts fly” message would become a card, she wrote us a thank you note that became the message for Passages design 93911: “I want to say thanks for all that you bring to my life.” Then along came 94076, based on a birthday message she sent Jodee, “The birthday clock is ticking and, yay! so are you.” She dedicated that card to a group of dear friends she’s enjoyed since her college days. On the card back you can see her dedication to The Gals of Bailey Third. “At Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC,” Carla explained, “eight of us lived on the third floor of Bailey dorm. The bonds we formed in 1978 have lasted, holding tight and strong … we’ve gotten together for a long weekend once a year for each of the past 44. There’s a real comfort in a friendship that formed when we were 18!”
There seems to be no end to Carla’s sense of kinship, kindness, or creativity … or cards! Stay tuned.

I love Carla’s energy and cards. Simple and true, her words settle on your heart. I’ll keep in mind you live in South Carolina, Carla. Jodee’s not the only one who travels and has a dog!
I have ordered and sent every one of Carla’s cards over the past several years, especially the one with the floating lanterns. But only today have I learned that she is a “PC” (Presbyterian College, Clinton, SC) graduate, just like my daughter! Bronwyn had such a good experience there, graduating in 1990. She met her best friend there, and that friendship continues as both, now with families, reside in Maryland. Bronwyn has been a classroom teacher, now a Middle School reading specialist, for more than 25 years. The reach of Cardthartic cards and the ways they communicate caring and ongoing love continues to amaze me.
